The serial number is A 418668. The saw shows little use which can be seen in the photos. I believe the plug on the cord may have been changed.

In 1924 the Michel Electric Hand Saw Co. Was founded to make the Skilsaw, a handheld circular saw. In 1926 the company was renamed to Skilsaw, Inc., and renamed in 1952 to Skil Corp. Sometime between 1946 and 1951, Skil acquired the rights to a new radial arm saw that had belonged to Tops Manufacturing Co. The saw's designer was Harry R. Wilson, who had earlier designed the radial arm saw. The 'TOPS' line of heavy-duty radial arm saws was marketed for the construction trade.

It was fairly successful in that market. In 1962 they sold the line to, who sold the line in 1973 to At some point Skil Corp. Became a division of In 1992 Skil became part of S-B Power Tool Co., which was formed as a joint venture between Emerson Electric and Robert Bosch GmbH. In 1995 Emerson sold their share to Bosch, and Skil and Bosch fully merged their operations. 'Skil' brand bench grinders were sold by Skilsaw, Inc., but were made by Handheld power tools are outside the scope of this web site.

The patent application was submitted in December 1946; sales of the radial arm saw could not have started before then because doing so would have invalidated the patent. • A 1962 issue of Wood & Wood Products had this note: A new manufacturer, Power Tools, Inc. Frm Part 1 Schweser Free Download. , Chicago, has entered the radial arm saw market with the purchase of Skil Corp.' S entire line of radial saws. The new firm is setting up production in temporary manufacturing facilities. • The says that Bosch acquired 100% ownership of S-B Power Tool Co. The same page gives 1982 as the founding date of S-B, but it is clearly a typo because that date appears out of order in their history timeline. Other sources give the date as 1992. • Correspondent Melissa Weil, whose husband and been a service manager at Skil, confirmed that the Skil/Bosch merged occurred in 1995: '.

• daveready, 7 years ago I like your saw I've been a carpenter for forty years myself and I just got a skil wormdrive from a friend in chicago.Its a model 67 51/4 in the original box, nice cord, knicked up a bit and a new plug, other than that doesn't appear to have been used much. I was surprised to see this didn't even know they made such a thing. If anyone has an idea what the possible years of manufacturing could be I would love to know. The serial number on the nameplate is a 180005. Oh buy the way it seems to run out just fine and has several vintage blades in the box. • stairgauge, 7 years ago In 1978 I purchased a skillsaw brand 16 inch radial arm saw mounted on a 2 wheel trailer. The plate on the motor says the model # is 315 and the serial # is 950584. It also says it was made by skillsaw, inc. The motor is round and runs on 220 power. As a framing contractor I have built many a home useing this saw. The saw runs. Like new I had no problem with it thru all these years.

Of course it does not meet todays o.s.h.a. Requirements but since I am retired I really dont want to junk it. Who knows maybe it is worth a little something.

No thought was given to tilt the blade, only cut depth, strictly a simple cut-off saw. They even produced them with a toggle start,if you have ever seen the patent drawings, same toggle start in the same place on the saw handle.

I'd have to quess not a whole lot of these were made. Not many left, and even fewer that are stll around and are in working orded. I too was trying to find info on it. I am 64 years old my father passed away at age 51 and he owned the saw.

I don't know if he bought it new or used. He was in the CB's in the 40's I know it has to be 75+ years old. • Professor Mike, 6 years ago I'm a little late to the game, but yes Kurt, you have a Model 'J,' Erie Can Company and all. There was an overlap with the Model 'J' and Mode 'E,' so later Model 'J's' have a trigger like the Model 'E,' however the saw castings of the two models are quite different.

(Think, using on the shelf, older made parts, mixed with new, like Detroit use to do). The first production Skilsaws were produced in 1928, and the toggle switch start is nearly identical to the patent drawings of the inventor, Edmond Michel.

I am an occasional Professor & General Contractor, working on a history of the Wormdrive, so I will look into the questions from all the other posters. All the best, •, 6 years ago No info on that man killer but Ive worked carpentry many years and growing up using those crappy skilsaws that have the motor on the left and view of blade on the right and the handle in front so you have to pull when you cut instead of push!! After using that as a kid and being introduced to the wormdrive skilsaw I fell in love with it. Now this old wormdrive looks awesome a carpenters piece of art.

I recently found it when cleaning out my basement. I appreciate the information posted by Professor Mike. My saw has the name plate and says it is an 8 amp and has a serial number 3816. This saw still runs very strong with an impressive amount of torque and it appears to have a very old blade in it as well, also 5 1/4'.

I can also see no place where a handle would have been mounted over the blade, as I have seen on other similar saws.
